Weekly Plan #6

Ready!

Get Set!

Fire!

Happy November parents and players.  Now that all the candies are gone and the tournament is behind us it is now time to refocus and get back to work.

I am sure everyone has watched Sharapova and Djokovic countless times.  So, what do they have in common?  Oh man, I can already hear some of you guys thinking "I don't watch women's tennis...blah, blah, blah:-)  Just for amusement, what do you think of their commonality?  No, not nothing.

They are both aggressive baseliners.  They hit each shot with superb balance and quality.  Sharapova with her big forehand, and Djokovic with his lethal backhand down the line.  And they are both mentally tough as nails.

The infant stage of competing is to have the ability to run another ball down, to put the ball back in play, simply grinding it out.  While that is a good start, it is not enough to sustain success at the higher level because everyone is doing that too.  In order to have an edge over our opponents, we need to have a weapon or a combination of.  A little something that intimidates our opponents.  It could be starting the point with a huge serve and follow with a big forehand to be in control of the point.  Or punishing second serves?

The last 5 weeks was focused on volume and now we are going to work on weapon building for the next several weeks.  However, that does not mean we throw out consistency and go for lottery shots.  If any, we will be working even harder on footwork, setting up before hitting instead of arriving at the same time, to allow us to hit a bigger and meaner ball.

Fitness component will also be adjusted to more explosive workouts.  We will be working with resistance bands and medicine ball.  Please bring your hear rate monitor everyday.

Until next time.
